Toast Casserole (Printable Version)

A no-fuss breakfast dish made by soaking chunks of bread in smooth custard and finishing it with a buttery nut topping. An awesome treat for special mornings.

# What You’ll Need:

01 - Four tablespoons of butter, unsalted
02 - A pound of sourdough or Italian-style bread
03 - Eight large eggs
04 - Three cups of half-and-half
05 - Three-fourths of a cup of light brown sugar
06 - One tablespoon of vanilla
07 - One teaspoon of cinnamon, ground
08 - Three-fourths of a teaspoon of kosher salt
09 - Half a teaspoon of ground nutmeg
10 - Two ounces of chopped nuts
11 - A quarter cup of all-purpose flour
12 - Maple syrup to drizzle on top
13 - Fresh berries as a garnish

# Step-by-Step Guide:

01 - Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray so nothing sticks.
02 - Tear the bread into small chunks and scatter them evenly in the dish.
03 - Combine eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, making sure the mix is smooth.
04 - Pour the custard mix over the bread. Push the bread down so it soaks up the liquid. Then cover and chill overnight.
05 - In a bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar, nuts, spices, and butter to make a crumbly topping.
06 - Add the topping on the soaked bread and bake at 350°F for 45–50 minutes until it’s golden and set.

# Additional Notes:

01 - You can prep this up to a full day in advance.
02 - Make sure to let the bread soak for at least an hour.
03 - Try using different types of bread or nuts to suit your taste.
